What does it look like to serve God while being caught in the middle of major political upheavals of your time? This chapter is so much more than the lions’ den. With the fall of the Babylonian empire, the political landscape around Daniel changed again. This time, the Medo-Persians ruled and Daniel was appointed as one of the top three officials next to the king. Again and again we see how the fear of the Lord makes a lot of difference in the halls of world powers. The fact that Daniel served under four kings (Daniel 6:28) in two major empires should not be lost to us: faithfulness to Yahweh accomplishes great things in the world. Most importantly, Daniel’s work under Cyrus paved the way for the return of the exiles to the Promised Land (cf. Daniel 6:28; Ezra 5:13; Isaiah 44:28; Isaiah 45:1).

Janssen Morados - Beyond Kings And Kingdoms: Faithfulness In Obscurity
Tuesday May 24, 2022
Tuesday May 24, 2022
How do you handle obscurity? King Nebuchadnezzar's reign is over; his son Belshazzar replaced him. Daniel's days of fame in the Babylonian palace are also over (Daniel 5:10–12). When the young king and his lords were feasting, a mysterious hand appeared and wrote on the wall. None of the sages in the kingdom could interpret the writing so Daniel was called in. The writing says that the days of the kingdom are numbered, that king Belshazzar didn’t measure up; and the invading Persians are coming. Even when he was no longer in active public service, Daniel was ready to answer the call and serve when he was needed the most.

Jon Naron - Beyond Kings And Kingdoms: The Power of God’s Truth
Tuesday May 17, 2022
Tuesday May 17, 2022
How do you speak God’s truth to people who are in power? King Nebuchadnezzar’s second dream was about his own humiliation—he was the great tree that will be chopped down to its stump. But instead of rubbing it in, Daniel was personally dismayed and alarmed at the meaning of the dream (Daniel 4:19). He exhorted the king to repent and show mercy to the oppressed that there may perhaps be a lengthening of his prosperity (Daniel 4:27). In a way, Daniel rebuked the king with tears in his eyes.

When is it right for the people of God to not obey civil authority? “When sin is decreed” is the short answer from the book of Daniel. The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace is not just a story of deliverance but a story of three young men who took a stand and obeyed God even if all the odds were not in their favor.

In times of grave threats, will you speak up even if it’s unpopular? Nebuchadnezzar had a troubling dream and he threatened to kill all the magicians, enchanters, and sorcerers of the kingdom if they could not tell him and explain to him the meaning of his dream. To stop the unjust killing of the wise men of Babylon, Daniel volunteered to interpret the dream even if he didn’t know its meaning yet. At home, he enlisted the help of Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah to beg God for revelation in order that they might not be destroyed.
